Give directions without giving away access

“Ask the household owner for the guest network name and guest password” can be enough for a visitor. A home administrator's password does not belong on the same page. Before printing the manual for a guest, read it once as someone who has never been in the house. If a visitor needs the guest network, check what that connection permits. The household administrator can give the visitor the access intended for guests.

Review the manual by audience

Mark each entry as useful for a resident, useful for a visitor, or restricted to the person who manages the service. “The cleaning kit is in the hall cupboard” can appear on a visitor sheet. Account recovery codes, private phone numbers and photographs of keys need a separate access decision.

Deal with copies already in use

Look for old printouts, downloaded copies and shared attachments. Removing a secret from the master document does not remove those copies. If an actual password or access code was exposed to the wrong audience, have the responsible person change it using the service’s normal process.
