Separate purchase proof from service terms

A receipt shows what was purchased and when. The warranty document or service agreement explains the stated process and conditions. Save both, along with the exact model and seller. Add any registration confirmation as its own record instead of assuming a purchase receipt proves every later step was completed.

Create a claim-ready note

When something goes wrong, find the actual terms before arranging paid work. Record the claim reference and the response. If you sell or give away the item later, remove your personal details before sharing documents and ask the provider which coverage, if any, follows the item.

For example, record “hall vacuum, model V2, bought in May, receipt in appliances folder, contact seller through order page.” If a claim opens, add its reference, the issue reported, and the promised response date. Do not leave the reference only in the inbox of the person who first contacted the seller.

Review the folder when the item leaves

If you give away or sell the item, ask the provider what coverage or documents can transfer. Share only the information the recipient needs and remove unrelated personal details. Keep any papers required for an open claim separately until it is resolved. A change of owner does not automatically settle what should happen to a warranty.
