Ask the purchaser what outcome is acceptable

Record the preferred result and the fallback before handing over the item. If the larger lamp costs more, give the person returning it a limit or ask them to call before paying. A preference for exchange, refund or credit is a decision only the original purchaser may be able to make.

Check the handoff from the shop's point of view

Look up the actual order, return window and accepted return route. A shop may need the purchaser present or may return funds only through the original payment method. Confirm what this shop accepts. Do not pass a payment card password to another person to make the handoff easier.

Bring back evidence of the result

Check the shop’s own instructions for the original card or order details before sending somebody across town. When they return, record whether you received money, store credit, a replacement, or no change. Keep the entry open if the refund has only been requested.

A return receipt that says “refund initiated” closes the trip, not the refund. Give it to the person who can check the account and agree when they will look. If the shop refused the return because the order owner must act, bring home the item and record the next step instead of marking it returned.
