Ask what the guest actually needs

One visitor staying a single night may want a place for a bag, towel, coat, and phone. A longer visit may require a drawer or steady access to a shared desk. Ask which needs matter before emptying a whole cupboard or displacing another household member's belongings.

Label whatever moves temporarily

Move household belongings in groups and note their temporary locations. If the entire hall shelf disappears into an unmarked box, the hosts may spend the visit searching for keys or gloves. Restore the usual layout after guests leave, especially items other people need every morning.

If you clear the hall shelf for a guest, put its contents together in a labeled container and tell the people who use them where they went. “Guest visit: gloves and umbrellas in bedroom basket” prevents everyone from searching during the stay. Do not move personal items without checking with their owner.

Restore the usual setup after departure

Check the temporary storage location and put back the items people need every day. If the guest found one arrangement especially helpful, keep a short note for the next visit. Make that decision after the household has tested the restored routine, rather than allowing a two-night visit to permanently disrupt a working storage space.
